The Google Experiment Part 4

In this segment, I am looking at one of the drawbacks and assets of Google; Google Drive.

It is an asset since it enables centralized data store for your files which is accessible from anywhere provided that you are connected online.

You can also link your phone to automatically backup your pictures and videos to the cloud. From more than one device if you need. This makes for a central location to access your files.

There are two major inconveniences to using Google Drive. The obvious one is that you need to be connected to the net in order to get access to the most recent version of your files. Offline access is available for desktop users. I tried to open a document using Google Drive with my phone while offline and was unable to.

The second, and most important drawback is the issue of privacy and security. After all, your information is being stored in a public cloud. After recent incidents involving Apple's iCloud service, I would be extra cautious about what I decide to store online. Certainly I would never consider storing any confidential data. This also means that professionals such as doctors and legal professionals should never use a storage service such as Google Drive.

In the end, Google Drive is a good way to backup and access your files, assuming that you are not concerned about the privacy angle.
