Perfect Office...

The Perfect Office

As I prepare to move in six weeks or so, I also prepare to relocate my office to our new home. As I do this I am thinking of ways to design an optimal working environment. So in order to achieve this, my first objective is to determine what is my primary need. Then I must consider what must fit into the office and how to arrange it. Finally, I will look at the technological aspect and decide on a few issues.

My primary need is to remain productive. In order to do so, I realize that I must arrange my layout in a way that I am at the center of the office and that key materials are within easy reach. So I am toying around in Visio, and I have come up with the layout as in the picture on the left. Next we will look at the reasoning behind this.

This allows for a good source of light and while the office is rather compact (12 feet by 9) I still found enough space to fit my big L shaped desk, a sofa and two bookcases with the space for a third if needed. Oh and there is enough room to move around!

As far as the equipment is concerned, unlike in our current apartment, the office will become the technological center. So here is a list of what the office will host:

  • A DSL modem
  • A Linksys Gigabit wireless N router
  • My desktop and laptop computers
  • a very old but great sounding pioneer stereo with a pair of huge Technics speakers
  • My all in one printer, which I hope to setup for wireless printing once and for all.

In the end, I must say that as long as I can organize this as planned I shal be happy and productive! I will post an update a few weeks after the move.
